identify adjectives that Doug Florian uses in his poetry to create a keyword poster.
Keywords
adjectives, poetry, poem, beast, feast, Florian
Materials Needed
- book Beast Feast by Doug Florian (Teacher preselects four to six poems he or she would like to use in the lesson.)
- plain white 8 -inch by 11-inch paper divided into boxes for each beast poem to be read. (Teacher's note: If you are reading four poems, divide the paper into four boxes.)
- pencils and crayons
Lesson Plan
- Teacher or school library media specialist reviews adjectives with the class.
- Teacher reviews the use of keywords and demonstrates examples for class (for example, two-legged, hard-shelled).
- Teacher explains to students that he or she will read a poem and students must listen for descriptive words or adjectives and write down the keywords used to describe that beast. Each poem will be read twice.
- Students are to use one box per poem and then draw a picture of what they perceive the beast to look like by relying on the description given in the poetry.
Assessment
Each student will be able to identify at least two to three keyword facts about each beast provided through the poetry. Each student will complete a "Beast Feast Poster" with keywords for each beast and a descriptive picture
