THIS IS COPY-EDITED TEXT, SO IT NEEDS TO REPLACE ANY PREVIOUSLY POSTED TEXT.] Title: Through the City by Subway Subjects: Social Studies, History, Current Events, Geography, Art, Language Arts Grade Levels: 3-5, 6-8, 9-12 Brief Description: Students explore the New York City subway system as a link to the people and places of New York City. Objectives: Students will learn about the subway system as a mode of transportation; understand it's importance and value; study its history and compare it with the history of subway systems in other cities; learn to recognize the different subway train destinations by their codes; learn to appreciate it as a means of connecting the varied groups living in the city. Key Concepts: New York City, subway, transportation, map reading, history, timeline, geography, community awareness, current events Materials Needed: a New York City subway map, computers with Internet access, construction paper, boxes, markers, bond paper, writing paper, pencil, chart paper Lesson Plan: Begin a KWL graphic organizer by asking [set ITAL] What do you know about the subway system? What do you want to know about the subway system? [end ITAL] Show a http://www.columbia.edu/~brennan/subway/SubwayMap.gif Map of New York City Subway System and ask: [set ITAL] If I'm traveling from Times Square and I want to reach the World Trade Center as quickly as possible, what train should I ride? Why? [end ITAL] Repeat the question several times, changing the arrival and departure points each time. Have students make a timeline of the New York City Subway system using information from sites such as http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/museum/index.html The MTA Transit Museum and http://www.nycsubway.org/works.html NYC Subway.org. Compare and contrast the New York subway with subway systems http://www.nycsubway.org/world.html Around the World. Use the New York City subway map to identify various locations in the city. (For example: What subway train should I ride to go to Chinatown? The World Trade Center? Carnegie Hall? Why?) Look for current articles about the subway system in magazines, newspapers, or online. Discuss the articles with the class or arrange students into small groups and have each group discuss a different article. Have students write subway slogans, poems, essays, or journal articles about the subway, and create subway posters.
