A Digital Quilt

Subject: Literature Visual Arts Ed. Technology
Grade: 3-5

Lisa Nash, who teaches at Hunter Elementary School in Toledo, Ohio, submitted this week's lesson. Students create a patchwork quilt using digital photography.

Brief Description

In this activity, which correlates with the book The Patchwork Quilt, by Valerie Flourney, students use digital technology to create squares for a class quilt.

Objectives

Students demonstrate abilities to take pictures of other students, use software to download picture files, print pictures, decorate picture frames, and insert their pictures.

Keywords

digital camera, photography, cultural connections

Materials Needed

digital camera and software, computer hook-up, photo quality paper, construction paper in various colors, glue, glitter, crayons, ribbons, bows, etc.

Lesson Plan

  • Have students take pictures of one another with the digital camera.

  • Help students download their pictures to the computer. Print the pictures as 5 x 7s.

  • Have students create picture frames by cutting 5 x 7 squares from the construction paper, cutting the frames into the desired shape, and decorating them with glitter, paper, ribbons, and so on.

  • Combine the squares into a "quilt" on a classroom bulletin board.

Assessment

A discussion of the activity will assess the student understanding of the project. The actual quilt square will also be evidence.
