Planning differentiation strategies can be time-consuming for educators. That’s why EducationWorld has combed through numerous online resources to find some of the best tools for tailoring instruction to different learning styles. The math- and organization-related tech tools below are great for teachers seeking to appeal to diverse students.
Number Patterns - National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
NLVM.usu.edu…
Designed for K-2, this game helps students identify number patterns. A series of numbers appears with the final two places left blank in a fillable field. Students must identify the pattern and enter the next two numbers in the pattern. They can check their answer before moving on. The patterns vary in difficulty, with a handy “Next Slide” button available if a pattern is too advanced.
Math Manipulatives - Glencoe McGraw Hill
Glencoe.com…
Teaches can use this open-ended manipulative tool to create any number of activities. From an initially blank slate, users select the appropriate grade level, background and particular manipulative from an impressive list of options. Once set up, students place the objects on the page to meet the criteria of the activity. Kids can use digital tools such as rulers and protractors, and teachers can access a timer should they want to implement a time limit.
Algebra Equations - Math Playground
MathPlayground.com…
This manipulative game is ready to go, with no prep needed. Students see a basic algebra equation which they must display visually by moving positive and negative numeral ones, along with an “X,” to a digital scale. If done correctly, the scale will balance and the equation will look exactly like the sample. Students can then solve for “X” by adding and removing the appropriate amount of positive and negative numeral ones so that “X” is isolated on one side of the scale and its value is represented with the fewest possible ones on the other. It takes some time to get used to the controls and the protocols, but once mastered, this can be a tremendous teaching tool.
Talking Calculator - PBSKids’ CyberChase
PBSKids.org…
Talking calculators have been popping up online, and this one from PBS Kids is among the best. All the basic functions are here, including decimal points. Additionally, this talking calculator can perform computations for numbers in the trillions. With clear speech and minimal lag time between typing the number and hearing it, this tool is great for engaging students.
Web Highlighter - InFocus
InFocus.cc
This tool, currently in beta, offers an innovative way of drawing attention to content on a Web page. Unlike other Web highlighters, InFocus does not place a transparent colored bar over the important text. Instead, the tool darkens everything on the page except the content you want to highlight. The result is visually engaging—the darkened area is still visible, but appears through a virtual sheet of smoked glass.
Social Bookmarker - EdShelf
EdShelf.com
Keeping track of useful Web sites can be tough. EdShelf, an all-in-one tool, not only keeps sites at arm’s length, but also keeps track of mobile apps. The interface is easy enough for novices while providing enough usability to satisfy tech aficionados.
