Tech in the Classroom: Skype Education

What is it? Skype Education is a free global community that invites teachers to collaborate on student projects and share skills and inspiration around specific classroom needs.

How dSkypeoes it work?  Skype Educationworks exactly like the parent Skype site. Because this is a subdomain of the parent site, visitors must log in through Education.Skype.com. If you already have a Skype account, you can get right to building your education profile. Otherwise, you have to register first.

Once logged in, users can begin searching for educators and ideas.

How hard is it to use? Skype in general is very easy to use, and its education-specific offerings are just as simple. All of the search controls are located in the user’s profile area. In terms of using it in the classroom, all teachers need is an Internet-connected computer with a webcam.

How well does it work?  Finding educators to help with resources and ideas can come down to sheer luck. Once you’ve built up a nice little network of collaborators, however, Skype Education becomes a tremendous tool for both professional development and in-class instruction.

How do I use it in the classroom?  Once educators establish a network, there are no limitations to what they can do. Skype suggests, among other things, trying “mystery Skype calls,” where classes connect online and give clues to help each guess the other's location. Another idea is introducing your students to a classroom in the location of a book they're reading or a subject they're studying.
