Tech in the Classroom: Digitarium Delta 3

What is it?  Digitarium Delta 3 is a newly redesigned, entry-level planetarium system for astronomy and earth science educators. The product, which comes out in August 2014, combines a high-resolution, high-quality, commercial-grade DLP video projector, proprietary Digitalis fisheye lens and control computer, all in one compact package.

How does it work?  Hook up the Digitarium Delta 3 to any compatible projector screen or presentation system. The product, designed for portable domes up to 24 feet in diameter, uses “Nightshade,” a simulation and visualization software that brings any indoor setting into the night sky in just two minutes.

How hard is it to use?  The planetarium includes an easy-to-use backlit remote control. Teachers in formal and informal education settings will appreciate being able to easily move, store, set up and use the Digitarium Delta 3.

How well does it work?  According to its Web site, the Digitarium Delta 3 offers a higher-quality projection than any spherical mirror-type system. The product is said to have high contrast, good focus and brightness over the entire dome, with no blind spots or cut-outs.

Can I use it in my classroom?  Your school will need a grant to purchase the planetarium due to its significant cost. The device is, however, perfect for engaging students when teaching them about astronomy and earth science. Set the product up in the gymnasium or cafeteria to make kids feel as if they're floating with the stars.
