podcasting7. Become comfortable speaking publicly.
This doesn’t have to mean addressing the masses from a podium. It could mean speaking to the five other members of your company department, or to your boss during a one-on-one. The fact is, in the modern workforce, employees need to be able to articulate their thoughts and opinions. Podcasting helps students conquer their fear by offering opportunities to address everyone in the room, as well as everyone watching or listening online.

8. Gain experience working within a set budget.
Podcasts and blogs are inherently cheap to produce, but they are not free. Giving students a strict budget with which to produce their product is an excellent first step toward budget management, a skill that employers prize.

9. Become familiar with industry software.
Many employers dread teaching new employees how to use software. Apart from lost work time spent getting new hires up to speed, this type of training can be a generally frustrating experience for both teacher and student. That’s why students can benefit from getting their feet wet with various software tools. Among podcasters and bloggers, using platforms such as Audacity and Wordpress becomes second nature. Students proficient with these tools can carry that experience into the workplace.

10. Learn how to “pitch” ideas.
Regardless of the industry, there will come a time when an employee has to “pitch” the boss on a new idea. Regardless of whether it’s a new feature for a Web site or a new technique for hanging drywall, the person making the pitch will need to effectively and concisely explain the idea so that his/her supervisor will consider it. Podcasts and blogs are perfect for this type of learning experience, as every new blog post idea or podcast theme begins a pitch.
