Content: Coordinated by two non-profit organizations, Rethinking Schools and Teaching for Change, The Zinn Education Project offers more than 100 free, downloadable history lessons and articles organized by theme, time period and reading level.
Design: Unlike many sites that feature the word “project” in their title, The Zinn Project is well designed and looks professional. All of the imagery is clean and the navigations all work as they should. Of note are the “browsable” areas. Here, teachers can browse through the materials based on either historical time period or topic. This feature is a great time-saver, especially for the first-time user.
Review: Educators should know going in that there is a level of self-promotion here. The Zinn Education Project supports the use of Howard Zinn’s best-selling book A People’s History of the United States in middle- and high-school classrooms. Accordingly, the site’s stated goal is to introduce students to a more accurate, complex and engaging understanding of United States history than is found in traditional textbooks and curricula. The site aims for students to learn that history is made not by a few heroic individuals, but by people’s choices and actions.
With lofty goals such as these, it is no surprise that The Zinn Project offers a wealth of classroom materials. Lessons, activities and printables are all available for download.
Bottom Line: If you’re seeking unique American History materials for class, The Zinn Project probably has something for you.
