Site Review: U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum

Site URL: USHMM.org

Content:  Dedicated to the memory of the Holocaust, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and its Web site aim to inspire citizens and leaders worldwide to confront hatred, prevent genocide and promote human dignity.

Design: Simple and understated best describe this site’s aesthetic. Each section front contains a simple scroller that features the most recent content. The rest of the site’s features fall vertically down the page in a traditional blog-style format. The result is an easy-to-follow, easy-to-navigate site. A solid collection of period photography bolsters the brilliant copy and helps humanize the event.

Review: The Holocaust was one of the defining events of the 20th century, not only because of its atrocities, but also because of the resilience of its survivors. The USHMM site provides content that touches on the Holocaust’s history, along with the perspectives of the people involved and the lessons we can continue to learn from it.

Visitors will find a wealth of information from those who directly experienced the events. These stories—and the tools the site provides for finding and registering victims and survivors—put a face on the event that a straightforward historical account cannot.

USHMM also helps students and teachers organize remembrance events (held around April). Accordingly, one of the museum’s goals is using lessons learned from the Holocaust to improve the way we treat each other.

Bottom Line:  If you’re looking for more than just an historical account of the Holocaust, the USHMM is the place to go.
