Content: With the help of the world’s best wildlife filmmakers and photographers, conservationists and scientists, ARKive is creating an awe-inspiring record of life on Earth. Freely accessible to everyone, the site functions as a resource for conservation, education and public awareness.
Design: When you’re working with people at the pinnacle of their field, your presentation had better stack up, and ARKive’s does, with a gorgeous design. Some sections of particular pages can get a bit cluttered, but these are few and far between.
What really stands out in terms of design is the imagery. All of the photographs are nothing short of stunning, serving to draw the user into a particular area of the world on display. The shots presented here could just as easily grace the walls of an art museum.
Review: ARKive partners with Google, The International Union for Conservation of Nature, The World Wildlife Fund and other conservation organizations to bring the natural world into classrooms and onto handheld devices around the world. Here, students can discover and learn about the world’s endangered animals, plants and fungi. The site reveals what they look like, what makes them special and why we should protect them.
To accomplish these lofty goals, ARKive offers everything from Web-based and mobile games to grade-specific lesson plans and classroom activities. These resources complement a massive database of nature images and videos that are organized into categories for easy consumption.
To be sure, this is not an amateur conservation site. ARKive has enlisted the help of some of the preeminent nature photographers and scientists to produce materials that are second-to-none. In addition, the esteemed Sir David Attenborough provides his legendary commentary in a plea for support.
Bottom Line: A stop at ARKive is a great first step to enriching any lesson on wildlife or conservation.
