Site URL: House.gov/content/educate
Content: This is the educational area of the United State House of Representatives Web site. Specifically designed for teachers and students, the content ranges from an overview of the legislative body to classroom resources.
Design: House.gov has a better design than many government sites. All of the pages are decked out in red, white and blue, but not in an in-your-face sort of way. Tinged with moderate conservatism, the entire site appears both professional and patriotic.
The primary navigation across the top of every page directs users to various areas, including pages that explain how the House works and introduce each of the representatives.
Review: As a starting point for classroom exploration, House.gov is an excellent teaching tool. Overviews of the legislative body’s workings are thorough, yet easily understandable. The area covering committees further explains how they work in the legislative process.
The listing of representatives alone could spawn countless lessons. Each member of the House gets a complete mini-site including a biography and details of his/her recent activity.
A handy cross-governmental link directs teachers who are seeking classroom materials to the Library of Congress’ site.
Bottom Line: Whether or not educators agree with individual representatives’ politics, House.gov is worth repeated visits for classroom purposes.
