White House Nixes Death Star Proposal

The Obama Administration has officially come out against the destruction of entire planets.

death starThe White House’s We The People initiative, an online petition that allows citizens to seek governmental action, is filled with what some would deem crazy requests. Nevertheless, the program promises that any petition generating at least 20,000 signatures will receive an official White House response.

That is what prompted an official Administration statement regarding inter-planetary destruction. A petition posted to We The People requested that the “government secure funding and resources, and begin construction on a Death Star by 2016.

By focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense.”

This petition garnered over 30,000 signatures, which led Paul Shawcross, Chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget, to respond,The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn't on the horizon.”

He lists several reasons, including the proposed space station’s estimated price tag of $850,000,000,000,000,000. Shawcross also poses the rhetorical question of, “Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?”

Shawcross goes on in his response to highlight many of NASA’s contributions to this type of technology: the International Space Station, the Mars Rover, etc. He also encourages students to study math, science and engineering in school. He concludes the official White House response by saying, “If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us! Remember, the Death Star's power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force.”

Using Steam and Stem in the ECE...

As we get ready to head in to summer, I know you are thinking about taking a break! You should be.  But, as a teacher, I know my brain was always thinking, “what is something new I will try next year”?  I am going to break down STEAM and STEM learning this summer in a several part series, to make it easier to try to organize and decide what YOU want...

Don’t Throw Out New Teaching Tools with...

The COVID pandemic caused k-12 teachers and higher education faculty to suddenly shift to using more technology, to teach virtually and remotely, to keep learning going in new ways. Educators were pushed out of their comfort zones, having to quickly learn new knowledge and skills.

For instance, some k-12 teachers were required to use course management systems such as Canvas—tools traditionally reserved for the college-level- to organize online work, grade assignments, and communicate...

Focusing on Learning

Principals can help shift the focus from teaching to learning if they insist that certain critical questions be considered and principals are in a key position to pose those questions. How can we continue to reduce student misbehavior and increase time on task? Is the redirect process working? What do we want our students to know and be able to do? Teachers are not teaching if students are not learning.

The focus of high performing schools are not on are you teaching but what are the...

Teaching Families To Cook at Home With...

As teachers, we want to share ideas with families on how to engage with their children at home in a meaningful way. During the 2020 pandemic we were all made to stay home (eat, shop, clean, do chores etc). Everything was done with a small group that usually included your family.  Hopefully families worked together on cleaning the house, gardening, planting flowers etc. Life skills are something that no one can take from you.  They are also something you are going to use your entire life....

Creating a Professional Learning...

Since their inception, schools have continually sought to improve in response to demands from teachers, administrators, parents, policymakers and legislators. When we look at the research into improving schools and examine the keys to school improvement, it invariably boils down to the ability of the people within the school to function as a professional learning community. A professional learning community (PLC) shares a vision. A vision is generally created by the principal to move the...

Changing the Role of the Principal

Some excerpts were used from "Enhancing A High-Performing School Culture and Climate." Bulach, Lunenburg and Potter

The type of principal needed in a high-performing school calls for a new approach to directing K-12 schools. The principal, faculty, staff, school board, parents and the community work together to create a shared vision of how to help all students achieve their highest potential. Each school is considered a professional learning community (PLC). This is a term that has...
