The Obama Administration has officially come out against the destruction of entire planets.
The White House’s We The People initiative, an online petition that allows citizens to seek governmental action, is filled with what some would deem crazy requests. Nevertheless, the program promises that any petition generating at least 20,000 signatures will receive an official White House response.
That is what prompted an official Administration statement regarding inter-planetary destruction. A petition posted to We The People requested that the “government secure funding and resources, and begin construction on a Death Star by 2016.
By focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense.”
This petition garnered over 30,000 signatures, which led Paul Shawcross, Chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget, to respond, “The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn't on the horizon.”
He lists several reasons, including the proposed space station’s estimated price tag of $850,000,000,000,000,000. Shawcross also poses the rhetorical question of, “Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?”
Shawcross goes on in his response to highlight many of NASA’s contributions to this type of technology: the International Space Station, the Mars Rover, etc. He also encourages students to study math, science and engineering in school. He concludes the official White House response by saying, “If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us! Remember, the Death Star's power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force.”
The idea for this post comes from an old Lego piece that lies on my desk.
Its a black piece with eight notches. I have no idea what Lego kit it comes from~ nor do I care.
But the piece will stay on my desk as a powerful reminder~ a reminder that we owe it to ourselves and to the children in the schools where we work to allow kids to share their interests and passions~ and whenever possible~ provide time and encouragement to pursue those passions with vigor.

I saw an article on beluga whales today that brought a smile to my face. The world's largest aquarium~ the Georgia Aquarium~ in Atlanta~ Georgia~ was told they can not acquire 18 more beluga whales. They currently have four such whales. The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration said that the beluga whales~which are very intelligent~should exist in their natural habitat~ the polar oceans~ and not in an aquarium. I realize that there are two sides to the issue. In captivity~ scientists...
Robot creator Mike McMaster made a replica with his team of robot tinkerers (also successful in coming up with some perfect R2D2s) of WALL-E~ Pixar's earth cleaning~ garbage-collecting bucket of bolts that audiences fell in love with. The robot is a 1:1 scale as shown in the movie~ determining the size of their WALL-E by references held in...

While I was attending a professional development workshop~ the trainer shared a social studies lesson he used with his class. With enthusiasm~ he described how he had groups of students decorate clay pots based on the Native American tribe they were studying. Then~ to the students dismay~ the teacher placed the pots in bags and smashed them into pieces.
A few students even cried (but wait~ theres a happy ending to this story).
The teacher buried the pieces and had the...
Every day, Mrs. Warner has them take out their journals and write.
And at one times or another, most of them unknowingly allow their fragile emotions to melt into words in a safe, private place.
In the frantic, stress-filled, high school day
Mrs. Warner hopes she's sound a way
To save some kids' lives.
I had a high school English teacher, Mrs. Weaver, who really sparked my desire to write. We didn't keep journals...
