Web Giants Warn of Malware

FBITwo giants of the Internet want to make sure you can still get to them after July 9.

Google and Facebook are actively scanning the computers of their users to find some of the nearly 1 million people who have been infected with the DNSChanger malware in the U.S. Google is displaying a warning across the top of its search results page, while Facebook has placed a similar warning at the top of its post-login page. If a user’s computer is infected, Google and Facebook will know and display the warning. Users who are not infected will see no warning at all.

With so many computers potentially impacted by the DNSChange malware, it is no surprise that these two mega-sites want to help eliminate it. Any machine afflicted with the DNSChanger will not be able to connect to the Internet after July 9.

As reported by CNet, the whole problem goes back to an online criminal ring from 2007 that was tinkering with computers' settings and then directing users to rogue servers that the criminals had set up. These servers then re-directed users to malicious Web sites. Late last year, the FBI arrested the ring and seized the rogue servers. But since so many infected computers relied on the servers to reach the Internet, the agency opted not to shut them down and instead converted them to legitimate DNS machines. Due to the high cost associated with operating these servers, the FBI has decided to shut them down on July 9, leaving any infected computer that has not been fixed with no way to reach the Internet.

The Google and Facebook warnings offer links to information on how to remove the DNSChange malware. Anyone who thinks he may be a victim is encouraged to run a Google search, or log in to Facebook to find out for sure.

Character: Reinvent Yourself In Learning

  • As a key member of the teaching and learning faculty, I am responsible for leading and learning by example. As The Head of High School, I have that excuse that I am busy in the limelight; as the principal learner, I am in the spotlight and need to make time to grow! Modeling learning is scary, exciting and inconvenient; we ask students and teachers to do it everyday. Can we do the same as leading learners?
  • This year, I am committing to extending my learning by taking four...

Character: The Silent Students and...

  • Character is sometimes defined by silence as well as chatter. But often, chatter is more highly prized. I wonder what more we could do if we paused in silence to recognize the quiet ones among us?
  • For the silent ones, I remind you that loud and continuous talking is not the sign of intelligence. And, for the gregarious ones, silence is not the sign of untalented. Quiet doesn't mean: weak, easy, stupid, deep, sneaky, or aloof; noise doesn't mean: strong, dominant, brilliant,...

A Quote from Jim Collins for Leaders

  • "The signature of mediocrity is not unwillingness to change. The true signature of mediocrity is chronic inconsistency." As leaders, many depend on us in our roles to be the voices of consistency; but, sometimes that consistency may lead us to make decisions not in the best interest of our faculty or our students. These groups watch for consistency for everyone else but seek exceptions for themselves and their unique positions within the school.

New Year’s Resolutions of a Gifted...

As 2014 approaches, I wanted to reflect on my resolutions for the coming year. As a teacher of gifted, I thought it would be beneficial to share my goals and thoughts for the future as well as have other teachers post their resolutions here.

First, a disclosure: Im not that big on New Years resolutions since most people dont keep them, and I believe in allowing goals to come to mind at any time of year and acting on them when inspired. With that said, I still think the New Year...

Turning Bad Chinese Food Into Satire...

I find myself bewildered by the public attention that Patrice Wilson's work garners. Starting with Rebecca Black and moving forward, he's had sensation after sensation on YouTube. He has transformed the music video and pop-song landscape by generating millions of views, based on the fact that the work is intentionally cheesy and lacking in artistic integrity.

Despite his distinct formula and trademark, he attracts the same mega-hyped publicity and video views on YouTube...
