Microsoft Enters Tablet Market

SurfaceNo, that image to the left is not an iPad surrounded by SmartCovers. That is the Microsoft Surface. Not to be confused with the giant table-sized computer the company released a while ago, the Surface is Microsoft’s entry into the tablet market.

Attempting to take a page out of Apple’s playbook on several levels, Microsoft revealed the Surface during a mystery press event in California. What those in attendance saw was an iPad knock-off that is heavier, boasts shorter batter life and an inferior chip. To be fair, the Surface does have an impressive cover that contains a fully functioning keyboard, but that is an accessory that must be purchased.

Microsoft has two versions of the Surface in the works, each for a very different audience. There’s a “consumer version” that will run Windows RT and a “business version” that will run Windows 8.

Microsoft isn’t saying exactly when the Surface will be available for purchase, or how much it will cost, but experts are predicting the “consumer version” to fall in the $500 price range with the “business version” to come in at over $1,000. The pricier version does have better overall tech specs than its cheaper brother, but that improved performance comes at the cost of weight and, of course, cost.

Cooking In the Classroom

When I think back to my school days, I can remember many events that stood out. My Second-grade teacher, Mrs. Wiersig, brought food into the classroom for us to try when we were studying vowel sounds. She did so many great things, and we cooked different recipes with stories we would read during reading groups, and...

Why Are Family Forums Important?

Family Forums start the first month of school and run each month until the last day of school. Family Forums were something that I used to build reciprocal relationships with the families that I worked with. They were important in my classroom because it allowed anyone that contributed to the child’s school success to become a part of our classroom community. I was able to really bond with the family members of...

Building a Classroom Community of...

I had previously written an article on running a classroom community of learners, but I wanted to take a minute to dive deeper into each category. I truly believe that building a classroom community of learners is important. As we are at the close of a school year, summer is a time for teachers to reflect and change things for the upcoming year. Here are some things to consider.

Improving Classroom Coachability

With every new piece of writing feedback, the pony-tailed girl at table two tapped her scuffed shoes under the table as she rushed to implement my suggestions. Soccer-obsessed Camila started the year penning jumbled sentences and nervously avoiding eyes in class. But her commitment to hard work and using feedback quickly rocketed her to the top of the writing class.

Like so many students, Camila offers an important lesson on what it takes to improve: be coachable. For teachers,...

Light Up St Patrick's Day - FREE...

Having taught in an elementary school named after the great Saint himself, I have celebrated many of these days in a haze of green!

The students would come to school dressed in their greenery and my first order of the day was to take a portrait of each student in my class. I used my ‘good camera’ and took some beautiful photos of the students individually, in groups and then as a whole class.

I would digitally create a placemat collage, for each student, using the pictures...
