Beyond the Bulletin Board

Teachers know that creating a genuine audience for students’ work dramatically increases their focus and motivation. Yet when student work goes beyond pen and paper, what’s the best way to showcase it?

Mark Anderson’s post on displaying student online work highlights this issue--an important one to consider for educators in tech-integrated classrooms.

Is it possible for students to publish interactive content online and gather reader feedback, while still ensuring safety? Anderson believes it is, and for this purpose he suggests Edmodo, a free tool that uses an interface similar to that of FaceBook. Educators can assign and assess student work, and only invited visitors can access the class page. See five great ideas for back-to-school Edmodo activities.

With any method of displaying online work, teachers should consider their students’ level of technology skills to determine whether a given platform will be feasible. They also should select an online tool that not only gives young people an easy method of updating, but also enables proper teacher oversight.

The "Challenge" With Gifted

Gifted students can be deceptive. They can appear to be high-performing, moving toward their potential, functioning at a higher level.
Then again, there is a chance it only appears that way.

Recently, I have been soul-searching and asking myself if I am really challenging my students. I am gently pushing, prodding, and encouraging them to reach new levels or are they appearing to reach those levels while their growth really remains stagnate or non-existent.

  • In the News:At an auction in Texas, someone spent $350,000 to hunt and kill a black rhino in the African country of Namibia.Black rhino are very endangered. It is estimated that less than 5000 are left in the wild. The money raised at the auction will be used to help the endangered black rhino but some people think killing a rhino, an old male, is just not the way to go about trying to "save" the creatures. Those who approve of the idea say that the selected rhino for the hunt isn't...

Character: Technology Confidence Phases...

  • Character appears to develop as we sensitively care for the development of others. In the world of building teacher confidence, this is especially true. Teachers need confidence to build competence. Watching teachers develop their technology confidence seems clear via their questions.
  • 1. The first phase for many faculty members is simple survival. Teachers strive to know how things work; how...

CPS Expands Access to Computer Science

Its difficult to imagine life without computers and technology in general - some days my eyes hurt from staring at screens too much. But computer science is much more in-depth than the basic Internet navigation and word processing skills many of us use in our professional lives. Coding, for example, is an important skill for students to master as we move towards the middle of this century in our electronic age, and can develop habits of mind that students can put to use in future STEM...

  • In an attempt to extend the writing skills of our students, we have established our first literary magazine at our independent school. Grand things growing from small beginnings is the inspiration; and, the title is much like the lessons learned in leadership! The myriad of skills students are embracing on the technical side of this authentic lesson in a flipped classroom are amazing; the...

A Quest to Address the Emotional Needs...

Its bothered me that I havent been able to address the social/emotional needs of my gifted kids the way I would like.

Last school year, I worked with the schools psychologist to present my gifted fifth-graders with a workshop on perfectionism. However, due to time constraints, testing, and other challenges (excuses, excuses), I have not been able to focus on more than academic needs.

But all thats going to change! I recently came up with a projectwhich is in the experimental...
