What is it? Discover, Learn and Play, built through a partnership between the Dallas School of Music and MusickEd.com, is an online music curriculum designed to take students from instrument selection through song performance. Teachers can use Discover, Learn and Play to supplement in-class music lessons.
How does it work? The program relies on a three-step process to facilitate learning. The first step explains the concepts behind each lesson, giving students background into the science behind the music. Step two presents students with various quizzes and ear training. The final step allows students to perform nine songs based on the concepts already learned.
How hard is it to use? The entire program is online and interactive, prompting students through lessons and leaving little room for error. The course is mobile-device friendly, so learning can take place nearly anywhere.
How well does it work? Although self-teaching programs sometimes have a dodgy reputation, Discover, Learn and Play offers a promising supplemental tool that can build on core face-to-face lessons.
How do I use it in the classroom? Use it to mix things up in the classroom, cater to different learning styles and reinforce existing music lessons.
