App Review: The Virtual Bacterial ID Lab

App Name: The Virtual Bacterial ID Lab

Cost: Free

What does it promise?: The Virtual Bacterial ID Lab App promises to help students identify different science techniques, bacteria and their DNA composition.

Does it deliver?: The app does deliver in grand fashion. For a free app, it contains a ton of information as well as an interactive step-by-step lab. The step-by-step lab enables students to learn the basic steps in identifying bacteria based on their DNA structure. Students will use tools such as a wire loop, micro centrifuge tube PCR tube, PCR machine and more.

According to iTunes, the app allows students to complete the lab in six steps: Sample Prep, PCR Amplification, PCR Purification, Sequencing Prep, DNA Sequencing and Sequence Analysis. To accompany their steps, is a notebook outline each step and its overall importance to the process.

“The techniques used in this lab are applicable in a wide variety of settings, including scientific research and forensic labs,” according to Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the developers of the app.

There is an enormous amount of information available through a seemingly simple and interactive piece of technology that is quite surprising for a free app.

Can I use it in the classroom?: Yes. However, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute does suggest that the app is meant for high school biology students. For biology teachers who are looking for a seemingly sophisticated but interactive tool in the classroom, this app is a great tool. It may come with complex vocabulary; however, the reference section provides a full glossary, list of tools and encyclopedia of selected bacteria and other pathogens. The app is a solid educational tool for a great value.
