iPad App Review: Chirp

App Name: Chirp

Cost: Free

What does it promise?  Chirp is a new way to share the digital stuff on an iPhone using sound.

chirpDoes it deliver? Chirp “sings” information from one iPhone to another. Users can share photos, links, notes and more, all from the built-in iPhone speaker. Chirp lets anyone send information over the air to others running the app nearby.

The app allows for quick and easy sharing between people in the same place. Unlike Bluetooth, Chirp doesn’t require users to pair devices and unlike with email, they don’t need to type in anyone’s address. They simply press the big yellow “Chirp” button, and anyone running the app can “hear” the data.

An individual chirp—a tiny piece of music that lasts about two seconds—consists of a couple of dozen notes played rapidly in a certain order, within a certain range, at a certain speed. The audio engine decodes the notes into a sequence of letters, which the app’s server understands. The server then returns a link to the user so s/he can go wherever the short code points.

Can I use it in my classroom?  Chirp makes sharing information easy, so whether you’re a principal disseminating faculty memos or a teacher giving students the URL to a helpful Web site, Chirp can make it happen.

All apps can be found in the iPad apps store under education.
