App Name: Google Earth
Cost: Free
What does it promise? This app offers the same incredible views of Earth offered by the desktop version.
Does it deliver? Yes, absolutely. One could even argue that the app is better than the desktop software. Users can explore the same global satellite and aerial imagery available in the desktop version of Google Earth, including high-resolution imagery for over half of the world's population and a third of the world's land mass.
The app is totally integrated with Wikipedia and (obviously) Google, so that users can research landmarks and geo-located items with a single touch. The controls are fluid and responsive, so swiping to a new area of the globe brings you there in a blink.
In terms of sheer content and interactivity, Google Earth is among precious few apps that would be a value at $9.99. The fact that it is free makes it a must-have.
Can I use it in my classroom? Google Earth can be used to supplement a myriad of subjects including geography, history, current events and a near-endless list of others.
All apps can be found in the iPad apps store under education.
