What causes students to leave school? Is it bad experiences such as bullying? Is school a "waste of time"?
"The prevailing narrative is one of laziness and boredom. [But] we wanted to understand these young people in a much better way than what is typically out there," said Jonathan Zaff, executive director of the Center for Promise, an organization involved in a study that looked closely at why students don't finish school. "We wanted to uplift the voice of young people," Zaff added.
The study--by America's Promise Alliance, a Washington-based, youth-advocacy organization--found that many factors drive students away from finishing school, according to Education Week.
Some of the reasons listed were family issues such as sickness, incarceration and others that led to students dropping out to support their families. Additional factors were physical abuse, homelessness or expulsion from school.
