Tennessee Parents Can Now Comment on State Standards

Thought bubble with question mark

While some states are firmly rooted in both Common Core standards and assessments, others are questioning these standards, some more formally than others. In fact, parents in Tennessee now have an opportunity to provide feedback on the state's academic standards online

“Tennessee is making historic progress in academic achievement, and this discussion is about having the best possible standards as we continue that important work,” [Governor Bill] Haslam said. “This valuable tool allows Tennesseans to contribute feedback on the current standards, adding their voice directly to the review process to improve student achievement,” according to a release from the governor’s office.

The website is part of “a public review process in partnership with the State Board of Education designed to recruit input from educators and citizens from across the state,”  the release said.

The state adopted the Common Core State Standards in 2010. Recently, Tennessee opted out of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessment. Those who log into the standards review website are required to provide their names, email addresses, what groups they represent (if any) and other identifying information. Once logged into the system, reviewers are able to mark a standard as kept or denote that the standard needs to be reviewed, rewritten or rejected.

The standards review page is located at: https://apps.tn.gov/tcas/.
