Ever wanted to go to Hogwarts? As of this month, Harry Potter fans around the globe can enroll for free online classes at Hogwartsishere.com. The website, created by a group that has no affiliation with J.K. Rowling or Warner Bros., offers a number of opportunities for aspiring wizards and muggles, such as getting sorted into one of the four houses, joining a dorm, and taking classes taken right out of the Harry Potter series.
According to an article from The Washington Post, the website was launched by 24-year-old Keith Cardin, and is a volunteer-run Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). When you enroll, students will receive an electronic owl with their “official” Hogwarts Acceptance letter. Students can then choose their house (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin), join a dormitory and enroll in classes. Students can also travel to Diagon Alley to purchase items on their list, such as schoolbooks and a pet, which consists of owl, cat or a toad.
Since “Hogwarts is Here” launched, over 62,000 Harry Potter fans have signed up for online classes, according to The Washington Post. Students can take classes such as History of Magic, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts (DADA), Herbology and others that are mentioned throughout the series. The classes come with their corresponding textbooks, which are written in full, pertaining to the subject. Each course is fully equipped with syllabi and an outline of assignments, which consists of chapter readings and answering a 200-300 word essay question.
Online registration is free and can be found here.
