A new study from The American Institutes for Research has found that schools that practice deeper learning experience higher graduation rates.
"The American Institutes for Research has published a new study finding an 8% higher graduation rate exists in schools that focus on 'deeper learning' as opposed to traditional schools,” said Education Dive.
Deeper learning is a specific mode of instruction that "encourages students to use knowledge and skills across contexts and disparate subjects, critical thinking, problem solving, communication, cooperation and self-directed time management,” the article said.
According to Education Dive, deeper learning and personalized learning are often correlated.
"Some principles of deeper learning, including critical thinking, problem solving, communication, cooperation and self-directed time management, are also included in most personalized learning programs…”
Education Dive touches on the fact that many schools are going so far as to mandate personalized learning plans; in Vermont, for example, all students in grades 7-12 must have personalized learning plans.
