Teachers seeking to better align lessons to Common Core State Standards are in luck, as some online resources are proving effective.
"In the Internet era, the best known resources should be able to easily leap political boundaries and get into the hands of teachers across the country," said Anya Kamenetz for Npr.com. "But reading and digesting the standards and determining what lessons best fulfill them is a big, big job."
Educators Evaluating Quality Instructional Products (EQUIP), an Achieve initiative, offers exemplar lessons. The initiative, which works to develop writing standards, is run by the New York State Department of Education; the Louisiana Department of Education oversees materials.
The 22 exemplar units or lessons are all open-licensed and free to use.
"The bottom line is that there is not a ton out there that is truly aligned, rigorous and high quality," said Kate Gerson, a former teacher and researcher for EngageNY. "So you have to be very, very careful about what you use."
