Leaked Exam Part of Common Core Protest

Leaked Exam Part of Common Core Protest

A copy of a New York English Language Arts exam was leaked online by anti-Common Core activists this week, according to the New York Post.

As the opposition against Common Core standards rages on in New York during this spring's testing, protestors upped the ante by posting "more than three dozen photographs" of a standardized test to the "Education is a journey, not a race—USA" Facebook page.

Though the Facebook page is no longer available, it had still been circulated hundreds of times before it was promptly taken down.

As for whether or not the leaked exam could have been used to cheat, state education officials said "the makeup period for the exam had concluded before the test became public, meaning no one was able to cheat using the leaked exam," according to the Post.

It's no secret that states throughout the nation hold issue with Common Core standards and tests. From poorly written test questions to a belief that "teaching to the test" creates a low-quality education, teachers and parents alike would like to see change.

But in New York, the opposition is a little more personal. "Parents and teachers have mobilized to encourage skipping the test in defiance of Gov. Cuomo’s plan to link a larger portion of a teacher’s evaluation to student exam results," the Post said.

Gov. Cuomo's changes to the state's budget included re-doing the teacher evaluation process so that there is much more emphasis on test scores, something that teachers are taking very personally.

As of right now, nearly 200,000 students have opted out of the state's standardized exams.
