EARLY CHILDHOOD NEWSLETTER

Volume 5, Issue 4
February 12, 2007

A WORD ABOUT THIS ISSUE'S THEME
.

Happy February! If the cold weather is keeping you and your students indoors, why not have a Sharing Music Day? Invite children to bring in CDs or tapes of their favorite songs. Let music fill your classroom while children listen, sing, and even pretend to be snowflakes flying around. What a great way to keep warm as February weather blows on by…

ACTIVITY IDEAS

.A SNOWY QUILT
Prepare for each child an 8-inch square of blue felt. Punch holes ¼-inch from the edge on all sides of the square. Give each child a 40-inch long white shoelace. Knot one end of each child’s shoelace and have children lace up and down through the holes around their squares. When each child has finished knot the ends of the laces together. Help each child use a paintbrush and white non-toxic acrylic paint to create a snowflake design on his or her square. You may suggest that children start their designs by painting intersecting lines to form the snowflake. Let the squares dry overnight. Make your quilt by displaying squares next to one another with small pins on a bulletin board.

MITTEN MATCH
Read to children The Mitten, by Alvin Tresselt.
--- Create paper mitten shapes in a variety of colors. Decorate pairs of them with matching patterns. Mix the shapes up in a box and let children work to match the pairs.
--- Provide a large bed sheet and stuffed animals. Tell children the bed sheet is the mitten. Let children act out this Ukrainian folktale.

WINTER WEATHER WEAR
Read to children Shirley Neitzel’s The Jacket I Wear in the Snow. Compare and contrast cold-weather clothing and warm-weather clothing. Ask, what type of clothing do you like best to wear? Tell why. Invite children to go through old magazines and catalogs to find and cut out pictures of clothing you would wear in cold weather. Let groups of children create cold-weather clothing collages.

.SNOWY SIMILES
Create snow similes on an easel pad or on the board, leaving out the last word or words. Invite children to help finish each simile about snow, ice, blizzards, and more. Start with simple sentences that will engage children and stir their creative juices:
--- The blizzard is as wild as ________________.
--- The snowflake falls as softly as a ___________.
--- Ice is as cold as___________.

SPARKLY SNOW
Mix together ½ cup flour, ½ cup salt, and ½ cup water. Put the mixture into a squeeze bottle. Let children make snow scenes or snow designs on pieces of black construction paper. Let the pictures dry thoroughly for a sparkly, three dimensional effect.

EATING GLACIERS
Make a package of blueberry-flavored gelatin, pour it into a pan and let it set. Mix with a one container of whipped topping, about ½ package of crushed chocolate wafers. Stir the mixture and spread it over the set gelatin. Serve small portions to children explaining that the blue is the icy center of a glacier (a mass of ice formed by compacted snow) and the white on top is snow with silt (fine bits of sand and clay) in it.
