Teacher of the Day

Name:  Sue Terzi

School:  Mrs. Sue's Little Sunshine Learning Center

Subject:  Preschool

State:  Maryland

What or who inspired you to become a teacher?

Heather Gates. She was a Pre-K to 3 teacher, and I was her assistant. Heather would tell me every day that I had a gift and I should follow my dreams. Then, after years of working with her, I opened up my own learning center.

How are things different for you now, compared to when you first started teaching?

I taught Pre-K for 10 years. Preschool is NOT like a daycare anymore. We are teaching 3-4 year olds how to read, add and subtract. No more coloring.

What advice would you give to a new or struggling teacher?

Always have control of your class! Use a reward system, follow a behavior chart. Children love to show off when they had a great day at school.

My best day in the classroom was when…

I was teaching the children about Dr. Martin Luther King. I had brown eggs and white eggs. Each child received both; the lesson was no matter what color the egg is on the outside, inside it is the same. As I was telling the children about Dr. King, one of my students stood up and said, "I understand now no matter what kind of eggs my mommy buys, it will taste the same." I just thought that was so cute coming from a three-year-old.

The best compliment I ever received was...

when a parent came into my classroom and told me that she went to church with her child Brooke (who was in my class) and she was so proud that during Sunday School Brooke knew all the answers that the Sunday school teacher was asking. The parent thanked me and said that she was so happy that Brooke was in my class.

What's your favorite part of the school year?

Christmas! We do a lot of arts and crafts during that time, the children learn the true meaning of Christmas, and they get to show off their acting skills. Every year I do a Christmas play called the Gift of Christmas. The families get to attend and afterwards we have a party.

What is your one must-have item for the classroom?

Erase boards.

What do you eat for breakfast on school days?

Oatmeal and a cup of coffee.

What movie or TV show do you secretly love?

"I Love Lucy"
