When I was a principal, I frequently reminded teachers to use me as a "motivator" and a "reinforcer." I told them to feel free to tell students before they completed an assignment that the principal would be seeing their finished products. And then I did that! I added a few written comments to each student's paper along with my signature.
I always expected my teachers to share students' papers on a regular basis. That was a great way for me to monitor how students were performing in the classroom. It also let students and their parents know I was interested in and aware of what was happening in the classrooms.
Frequently, parents remarked how surprised and pleased they were that I had read the papers and taken time to write comments on the students' work.
