New Site Puts Unique Twist on Fundraising

Tired of the same old “sell and save” model, two men have created what they believe is the future of school fundraising with DealsForSchools.com.

The site allows users to earn money for their particular school simply through online purchases of items they would normally buy anyway.

“My business partner and I had a company where we worked with local orthodontists and dentists to put their advertisements on school folders, then gave the folders to schools for teachers to use,” said Ben Bussey, co-founder of DealsForSchools. “We liked that, but there are limitations, and that whole industry can be confusing with people saying they represent schools, when this sometimes isn’t true. So we were looking for something different, and that’s when Groupon came along. We thought we could do something like Groupon, but for schools.”

After spending a year beta-testing easier ways for schools to earn money and gathering feedback from principals and PTA/PTO officers across the country, DealsForSchools has re-launched its platform with three ways for schools to earn money. Parents, teachers, grandparents or anyone in the community can buy a daily deal, and a school of their choice will earn 10 percent of every daily deal sold.

There is also a standard shopping element to the site, with over 1,700 retailers participating. The target school receives up to 30 percent cash back on online purchases. The final piece to the fundraising puzzle is DealsForSchools’ partnership with Priceline. Anyone booking travel through Priceline can earn $5 per room per night for their school.

“The travel element is really great,” Bussey said. “It doesn’t matter how expensive the room you’re booking is. Whether it’s a $50 room or a $350 room, your school will get $5 per night for each room you book through us.”

The site also provides a browser plug-in that reminds users when products they are searching for online are available for purchase through DealsForSchools. This is an exclusive feature that simplifies the process for parents who want to help but don't want the hassle of remembering codes or specific Web sites.

Schools interested in using the DealsForSchools fundraising methods can register at the site.

“DealsForSchools.com gives schools a way to raise much-needed funds without asking parents to spend any more money or taking more time out of their busy days,” said Michael Pate, co-founder of DealsForSchools. “It has been so motivating meeting PTA moms and dads from all around the country who appreciate an easy and lucrative fundraiser like ours.”
