10 Fundraisers That Celebrate the Great Outdoors
Seeking a fun, outdoorsy fundraiser to end the school year with a bang? Here are some ideas that can bring the school community together:
- Wagner Greenhouses: With this fundraiser, the community can plant together. Find a patch of land on your school's property and get people together to plant up to four varieties of flowers. Wagner Greenhouses' program, Jump into Spring, provides brightly colored, frost-tolerant plants in oval planters and hanging baskets. Organizations can expect to make $5-$10 per container.

- Community Tag Sale: Take your playground and turn it into a school-wide, or even town-wide, tag sale. Tag sales, especially when the weather gets warmer, offer a great outing for families. Parents always have stuff they want to get rid of, so a tag sale welcoming people from all over town would bring a large crowd. People will be willing to pay a small fee of $20-$25 per vendor table if it means getting some cash for unwanted knick-knacks.
- TerraCycle: TerraCycle is a great way not only to get cash for your school, but also to teach students about the benefits of recycling. Plan an earth-themed field day and bring your school to local parks, playgrounds and sports venues to clean litter off the ground. Also, get children to collect waste from their own homes and bring it to school. TerraCycle collects plastic lunch bags, empty juice pouches, potato chip bags, gum wrappers, energy bar wrappers, markers, glue sticks and more. Collect the waste and ship it to TerraCycle, and you will receive money back!
- Car Wash: Car washes are always an easy, go-to fundraiser. Some say they are overdone, but if you really want to make your car wash a success, set up a lemonade and concession stand with snacks and baked goods for customers to browse while their car is being washed. Sell some school swag, put out pamphlets or bring vendors with jewelry or other items.
- Fun Run: A Fun Run is a great way to get the community together and get students outside and active. In a Fun Run, students find sponsors throughout town to pay them for each lap they are able to run. Create t-shirts to make it a fun event. The student who runs the most laps can win prizes. Volunteers can sell water, energy bars and other nutritious snacks for cash.
- Town Green Music Festival: A music festival held outside at a community park, town green or other venue is a great way to get the community together outdoors. Musicians, the school's band and chorus, or students interested in showing off their talent can sign up and perform. Volunteers can run small concession stands or sell t-shirts, school gear, raffle tickets and more.
- School-wide Barbecue: There's nothing like an old-fashioned barbecue to welcome the new season! Get a band or school performers; set up games, relay races and other outside activities; and grill up hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken, veggie burgers and more. People will enjoy coming out and relaxing in the grass with blankets. Make pets welcome!
- New Leaf Greenhouse: New Leaf Greenhouse offers a variety of annuals, perennials, mixed baskets and more for fundraising. This company also offers unique products such as organic vegetables and herbs. The company can also be a great option for purchasing end-of-year gifts for teachers and administrators.
- Outdoor Movie Night/ Drive-in: Pick a perfect spring or summer evening and gather folks to a community park, the school's playground or sports fields and host a movie night or 1950s-themed drive-in. Charge a small fee for the movie; sell popcorn, soft pretzels and concession drinks; and enjoy the show. Although the inflatable movie screens may be expensive, the idea is bound to bring a big turnout. Here's a cheap site where you can rent inflatable movie screens.
- DIY Birdhouse/Feeders Sale: Do-it-yourself (DIY) projects are increasingly popular. Now that the weather is warmer, birds, squirrels and other animals are out and about. What better way to welcome them than by creating unique homes? Go to any craft or home supply store, purchase unfinished birdhouses, and have students assemble and/or paint their own. Make it an outside event--maybe part of a spring- or summer-themed party, barbecue or sports-a-thon--and sell your birdhouses for a small profit. The birds will thank you!
