Fundraiser Review: Popcorn Palace

URL: http://www.popcornpalace.com

What is Sold:  A variety of flavored and dipped popcorns sold in three sizes as well as sampler packs.

About the Program:  Popcorn Palace started as a small retail store in Chicago about 15 years ago. Since then, the company has continued its retail operation and branched out into fundraising programs, Internet sales, corporate programs and more. The company prides itself on creating well-flavored popcorn in micro-batches with good-quality ingredients. Popcorn Palace has set pricing for its fundraising options, offering a Snack Bag (4-cup) size, a Classic Jar (half-gallon) and a Value Bag (1 gallon) in 12 flavors. There are also three sampler packages available.

Support Available for Schools:  To learn about the program, schools need to order a Fundraiser Kit from Popcorn Palace, which includes two sample bags of popcorn, an order form and FAQ sheets about the process, mark-up and shipping. After that, most everything can be done online or over the phone. (Online seems to be the preferred method.) Once they’ve decided to do a Popcorn Palace fundraiser, administrators need to start planning. First, decide when the fundraiser will be held (the company recommends a 2 to 3-week window for ordering), create an account on the Popcorn Palace Web site and request pre-printed order forms. Once orders have been placed with the students, the totals for each item need to be tallied and the order needs to be placed with the company, which can be done online. There is a charge for shipping, unless the order’s value exceeds $5,001. The company does offer shipping discounts for volume orders as well.

Bottom Line:  Popcorn Palace offers a nice variety of popcorns in interesting flavors. It’s also a quality snack for which people won’t mind paying. From a fundraiser’s standpoint, however, you have little control, since all the prices are already set and the products are already chosen. That can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your perspective. In terms of mark-up, there is a 50% mark-up on all products, so a Snack Bag will earn $3-$4 per bag for the school, minus shipping costs (if you don’t qualify for free shipping). Ultimately, this is perfect for a school seeking a turn-key fundraiser that can be pulled together relatively quickly.
