Taking aim at online bullies, social media giant Facebook is releasing an app designed to help protect potential victims.
The app, “Stop Bullying: Speak up,” signals a partnership with Facebook and media firm Time Warner. It offers users resources on bullying prevention. The app also provides an oath that children and adults are encouraged to take, promising to say something if they witness an act of bullying.
While the Time Warner partnership with Facebook and their app are new, the “Stop Bullying: Speak Up” campaign has been active for over a year. Time Warner’s Cartoon Network currently is home to the campaign and offers additional anti-bullying resources on its Web site. The campaign encourages those who see something wrong to say something: “If you or someone you know is a victim of bullies, tell your parents, teachers or another adult you trust. By letting other people know about it, you can help make sure it stops. Join Cartoon Network and help us spread the word about bullying awareness and prevention,” the campaign’s Web site states.
