Book Review: Nonfiction Notebooks

Title:  Nonfiction Notebooks - Strategies for Informational Writing, by Aimee Buckner. Stenhouse Publishers, 2013.

Description:  This book explains in detail how writers’ notebooks can help grade 3-8 students improve their nonfiction writing (reports, articles, memoirs, essays, etc.). This type of writing has taken on greater importance in U.S. schools because of the Common Core State Standards’ emphasis on informative and explanatory writing.

nonficttion notebooksNonfiction Notebooks describes how prewriting exercises are vitally important when it comes to penning informational pieces. For example, with the “All About” strategy, kids write everything they know (or think they know) about a topic in their notebooks, then determine what they don’t know (or would like to learn more about). This activity helps them form research questions and organize their subsequent information-gathering process.

Once their drafts are underway, another helpful strategy is “Over-the-Shoulder Writing,” where students identify places in their writing where readers might be confused, and insert sketches and captions to aid understanding.

Through ample concrete examples and numerous images of actual student work, the book demonstrates how writers’ notebooks can help students capture their thoughts, refine their ideas and improve their research strategy, which all lead to better final products.

Bottom Line:  From exploring topics to gathering information to final assessment, Nonfiction Notebooks takes teachers step-by-step through the process of how to help students use notebooks to guide their informational writing.
