Report Card Comments for Grades 3–5

Reaching the end of a grading period often means facing one of the most challenging tasks for teachers: writing thoughtful, personalized comments for every student in the class. The sample comments below are designed to help you recognize each child’s strengths while still providing meaningful feedback. Many statements can also be adapted to communicate areas for growth or future goals.

For example, the positive comment:

  • “Sam cooperates consistently with others.”

can easily be revised to:

  • “Sam would benefit from cooperating more consistently with others.”

Likewise:

  • “Sally uses vivid language in her writing.”

can become:

  • “With continued practice, Sally will learn to use more vivid language in her writing.”

You can also adjust comments to encourage support from home. For instance:

  • “Jan seeks new challenges.”

may be rewritten as:

  • “Please encourage Jan to seek new challenges and take academic risks.”

By making small wording changes, you can transform positive observations into constructive goals that support student growth and encourage collaboration between school and home.

Attitude

  • Shows a positive attitude toward learning and classroom activities.

  • Demonstrates enthusiasm and curiosity during lessons.

  • Approaches new challenges with confidence and persistence.

  • Maintains a respectful and cooperative attitude in class.

  • Is developing a more positive attitude toward academic tasks.

  • Responds well to encouragement and feedback.

  • Takes pride in completing work carefully and thoughtfully.

  • Demonstrates resilience when faced with difficult tasks.

  • Would benefit from maintaining a more consistent effort during independent work.

  • Is encouraged to approach learning opportunities with greater confidence.


Behavior

  • Consistently follows classroom rules and expectations.

  • Demonstrates self-control and respect toward peers and adults.

  • Behaves responsibly during classroom activities and transitions.

  • Is a positive role model for classmates.

  • Shows improvement in making responsible behavioral choices.

  • Works toward resolving conflicts respectfully and appropriately.

  • Is learning to manage emotions in a productive way.

  • Needs occasional reminders to stay focused and follow directions.

  • Would benefit from improving self-regulation during group activities.

  • Is encouraged to make thoughtful choices that support a positive learning environment.


Character

  • Demonstrates kindness and empathy toward others.

  • Shows honesty and integrity in daily interactions.

  • Treats classmates with fairness and respect.

  • Demonstrates responsibility by completing tasks and helping others.

  • Displays perseverance when faced with challenges.

  • Is developing strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.

  • Shows leadership qualities during classroom activities.

  • Demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility for personal actions.

  • Is learning the importance of patience and cooperation.

  • Continues to grow as a caring and respectful member of the classroom community.


Communication Skills

  • Expresses ideas clearly during class discussions.

  • Listens carefully and responds thoughtfully to others.

  • Demonstrates strong speaking and listening skills.

  • Participates respectfully in conversations and collaborative activities.

  • Uses appropriate vocabulary to explain ideas and opinions.

  • Is gaining confidence when speaking in front of the class.

  • Communicates effectively with peers and teachers.

  • Demonstrates active listening during instruction and discussions.

  • Would benefit from speaking more clearly and confidently during presentations.

  • Is encouraged to contribute more frequently during classroom discussions.


Group Work

  • Works cooperatively with classmates during group activities.

  • Contributes positively to collaborative tasks and discussions.

  • Demonstrates leadership skills while working in groups.

  • Shares ideas respectfully and listens to others’ opinions.

  • Helps create a positive and productive group environment.

  • Participates actively and responsibly in team activities.

  • Is developing stronger collaboration and teamwork skills.

  • Works well with a variety of classmates.

  • Would benefit from contributing more consistently during group work.

  • Is encouraged to balance listening and participation during cooperative activities.

  • Shows increased willingness to contribute during discussions.

  • Would benefit from participating more consistently during class activities.

  • Is encouraged to ask questions and share ideas more often.


Positive Overall Comments

  • Has had a successful term and continues to demonstrate growth academically and socially.

  • Is a valued member of the classroom community.

  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic and positive attitude toward learning.

  • Continues to make steady progress across subject areas.

  • Shows kindness, responsibility, and respect each day.


Growth-Oriented Overall Comments

  • Is encouraged to continue building confidence and independence in daily work.

  • Would benefit from remaining focused and organized during classroom activities.

  • Continued practice and participation will help strengthen academic skills.

  • Is making progress and should continue working toward greater consistency.

  • With continued effort and perseverance, will continue to grow academically and socially.
