Celebrate Johnny Appleseed's Birthday With These Six Activities
On September 26, classrooms around the country will be celebrating the birth date of Johnny Appleseed, an American pioneer who introduced apple trees to large parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.
Take time out of your busy schedule this year to commemorate and remember the legend who traveled and planted apple trees for everyone to enjoy. EducationWorld has curated a list of six activities teachers can use for teaching Johnny Appleseed in the classroom.
- American Legends Volume 1: Johnny Appleseed: Introduce students to the animated story of Johnny Appleseed. The video is less than 10 minutes long, but it shows Johnny as a likable character, and is entertaining to both students and teachers. Students will be able to learn about his story through song and dialogue, and see why he is such a legend.
- Johnny Appleseed: Provided by SchoolTube, students can follow a narrated picture book depicting the life and legacy of Johnny Appleseed. The video isn't as entertaining as the animated cartoon, but is informative and serves as a good tribute to his life and legacy.
- ReadWriteThink: Use this timeline tool to fill in information about Johnny Appleseed's life found in the websites and books provided. Students are asked to look through the information and find and classify what is "fact" and what is "exaggerated". Students are then instructed to create a Venn Diagram to organize the information.
- The Story of Johnny Appleseed: Provided by Best Apples, students can read a short biography about Johnny Appleseed, and are then asked to complete the crossword puzzle corresponding with the biography.
- Johnny Appleseed Coloring Page: Have the younger crowd listen to a short background story about Appleseed by Enchanted Learning, and then color in their own printout of Johnny Appleseed standing next to a row of apple trees.
- Johnny Appleseed Read and Answer Quiz: Provided by Enchanted Learning, give students the handout and have them follow along as the teacher reads a short biography of Johnny Appleseed and his life. Then, take some time for students to fill out a short answer quiz.
