Relationships: Digital Footprints

  • Like you, I care deeply for my students! I want to keep them safe from bullies, harm, stupidity, and their own adolescent errors. What better place to begin by reminding them of their need to protect themselves electronically from far-reaching errors. Here are tips I have gleaned from a variety of sources that I will share as "Tips Of The Day" in each class this week.
  • 1. Monday-Please Use Your Privacy Settings
  • Put your social media on a short leash! Use Lifehacker.com with its "Always Up-to-Date Guide To Managing Your Facebook Privacy". Stay on top of this popular social media tool because you cannot control someone else's stupidity and lack humanity. You may also want to place under control your Twitter account by not allowing others to retweet their followers. Use the "security and privacy" on the account settings page.
  • 2. Tuesday-Please Keep A List of Your Accounts
  • Delete what you are no longer using. Find the ones you have signed-up for and delete them. And while we are under sharing, remember-don't over-share! Things like usernames, aliases, passwords, last names, full-names-as-user-names, pictures, addresses, and other important data. This also means stupid pictures and all of the other things you do not want to see on a public bulletin board on an interstate highway on your way to meet your parents!
  • 3. Wednesday-Please Remember that Sending Is Like Publishing
  • Every time you send a message, post, or picture, you are publishing. You are doing what CNN does as a news story. And that news story on the internet is never dead!
  • 4. Thursday-Please Use Digital Tools to Manage Your Footprint
  • A host browser extensions and App add-ons can limit capture of some personal data. Examples include (Disconnect.me), DoNotTrackMe (Abine.com) and Ghostery (Ghostery.com). Have students check these out!
  • 5. Friday-Please Google Yourself
  • Let's see what you can find about yourself. What do you think? Are you surprised what you have found?
