Pattern Blocks

This week my students will be constructing new shapes with pattern blocks. Here are some of the activities I plan to use.

Day 1: We will create an anchor chart to identify the pattern block shapes and their attributes. After we discuss the attributes~ my students will have free exploration time with the pattern blocks.

Day 2: Constructing new shapes: I will read aloud The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns to introduce how shapes can change.

I will be using the Patch Tool on the SmartBoard to show students how to create new shapes. The students will take turns creating new shapes. Then~ I plan to pair students up and let them create with the pattern blocks. I am making task cards for the students to follow~ instructing them how many of each shape they must use to create new shapes.

Day 3: Repeat Day 2 activities for reinforcement.

Day 4: Students will create pictures using pattern block cutouts. I am going to challenge them to use a certain number of pattern blocks to complete the picture.

Here are some helpful links to get you started with your plans.
