REVIEW:
This online exhibition was created as a complement to the traveling Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary Exhibition. The Franklin story is told in six chapters: Character Matters; B. Franklin, Printer; Civic Visions; Useful Knowledge; World Stage; and Seeing Franklin. Each of the chapters is built around images, artifacts and original documents. Users can listen to a letter to the editor of The New England Courant from Silence Dogood, a pen name Franklin used; try their hand at selecting the correct ending for one of Poor Richards aphorisms; or listen to the music of the Glass Armonica. Teachers will want to check out the Education link in the box at the top of the page. It contains interdisciplinary lesson plans for elementary, middle and secondary students that correspond to the chapters in the exhibit. Included is a multimedia site, Franklin Remixed, designed by middle school students for students that explores his contributions to the American republic and character. Additionally, Frankliniana is a database of over three hundred objects with a close association to Benjamin Franklin such as images, artifacts, and other memorial objects.
