CONTENT:
SMORK: Awesome Internet Sites for Kids offers a safe way for children or parents to access Internet sites in a variety of areas. Subject areas range from Arts and Crafts to Zoos with lots in between. In this sense, of course, the site has no content at all, but is a "pure portal" to an array of sites.
AESTHETICS:
A drop-down menu is featured against a simple white background, along with the SMORK computer character logo, on this simple but useful site.
ORGANIZATION:
The site couldn't be simpler: You use a two-part drop-down menu, in which you choose a topic and a number, to navigate to sites "Smork" has determined are safe for kids. The only flaw in this scheme is that the drop-down menu of numbers always offers you the choices 1-21, even if there aren't fully 21 sites available within a particular category. Clicking on "Animals" and "21," therefore, brings you back to the main page with a big "Oops!" on the screen.
REVIEW:
The SMORK site allows children safe access to Web sites that are of interest to kids and that have been vetted as being safe for kids, without the need of typing in the full URL. This helps to avoid the possibility of stumbling upon an inappropriate site when mistyping a URL, and, of course, serves the purpose of having categorized safe sites. The unique concept is to offer a portal that kids can navigate without learning how to use a search engine. Subject areas include animals, environment, reading and writing, girl power, health, homework, virtual museums, and more. More than 30 categories are available in the drop down menu. With up to 21 links per category, this site offers a strong resource for students, parents, and teachers, but of course, this is a far more limited and limiting resource than a search engine.
