App Name: Bill Nye The Science Guy (iPhone/iPad)

Cost: Free

What does it promise? The Bill Nye The Science Guy app promises a fun and engaging ways for children to travel through and learn about the planets and galaxies and much more. It’s been listed on numerous sites as a top STEM app and promises a pretty attractive layout.

“Just scan your thumb to gain entrance to Nye Labs, the most amazing, scientifically fascinating place on Earth (and possibly beyond!),” according to iTunes.

“Twenty orbits around the sun and 28 Emmys along the way—now that's something to celebrate!”

Does it deliver? Yes the app does deliver. The functionality and the design of the app shine the most. It’s very engaging and the little tips students learn while exploring is pretty neat. For instance, according to the app, the Earth is hit by lightning 8.6 million times a day. After photographing the planet students are able to drop their own little satellite before moving on to the next. That’s only one of the games offered off of the digital desk.

Can I use it in the classroom? This app seems to be a bit more driven to personalized learning. It’s more of a game that parents would like their children to have because it has a lot of educational value. There are a good amount of advertisements throughout the app which iTunes warns the customer about. This could make in-class use a bit more difficult if you do decide to use it. Other than that, the app is a pretty solid experience that children will enjoy.
