App Review: '1st Grade Splash Math Games' (iPad/iPod/Android)

App Name: 1st Grade Splash Math Games For Addition & Subtraction Learning (iPad/iPhone)

Cost: Free

What does it promise? The 1st Grade Splash Math app promises a concentrated app that provides special focus on growing the addition and subtraction skills of students. It also promises to help 1st graders master over 70 key math skills in an engaging, fun and effective manner.

According to the company, Key Features include:

Self paced math practice program

Explanation for wrong answers

Scratchpad for rough work

Motivational rewards and games for correct answers

Monitor progress with real-time progress dashboard

Progress synced across multiple devices.

HD graphics and sound effects to give an amazing game play experience.

COPPA compliant

Does it deliver? This app delivers in many ways. Yes it is true that there is a world of skills that children can learn from the app. Whether it’s simple counting, or adding and subtracting, students will be able to test the knowledge they learn in the classroom in a fun manner. What’s even more interesting about this app is while the name suggests it would be geared towards 1st graders only, there are actually 5 grade levels to choose from.

When it comes to the overall design, not only is it easy to use, it’s also one of the most crisp and fun apps. The images and colors are bright and the gameplay itself is interactive and engaging as the app promises.

Can I use it in the classroom? Unfortunately, there might not be room for this app in the classroom. It really seems like a good source of practice for students when they are home. The only possible way to implement this app into the classroom would be to project it onto a larger screen and have children raise their hands to answer the problems in the game. On a final note, it would benefit the company to make sure the in-app purchases ad doesn’t pop up as frequently as it does. It’s understandable why they are there but could ruin the flow of learning.
