Site URL: BBC.co.uk/schools…
Content: This is an online learning destination focusing on several math disciplines for 11 to 14-year-old students.
Design: Created and maintained by the BBC, the site uses a brilliant design. All of the individual pages pop with color and engage without being distracting. Likewise, the interactive games and quizzes capture students’ attention and keep them focused.
Review: This site receives high marks for ease of use, breadth of topic coverage and all-in-one convenience.
Users find a list of math disciplines on the homepage. There, they can choose from disciplines such as numbers, measurement, algebra and handling data. Each discipline contains a textual lesson, followed by an interactive game. The games reinforce the particular lesson and let students test their knowledge. If a task in the game is not completed properly, the student may try again. Once the game is complete, students take a quiz that’s graded instantly.
While this site is certainly no substitute for classroom instruction, it is a robust, complete companion to classroom instruction.
Bottom Line: Why bother with boring math drills and typical homework assignments when a site like this exists?
