Content: The Art Institute of Chicago is a rich resource for student experiences, teacher professional development and classroom resources across grades and subject areas. The Web site provides an excellent digital representation of the museum’s offerings.
Design: Clean and professional, the Institute’s online home presents a top-notch design. Museum holdings appear in background images and when the focus of a page, their high-res format enables easy viewing.
Classroom materials are easy to follow and avoid the pitfall of cramming too much content into a finite space. The entire site, especially the teacher section, flows naturally, making navigation a breeze.
Review: Although The Institute offers plentiful online teacher materials that do not require a trip to Chicago, the site’s Teacher Workshops section describes upcoming on-site professional development programs. The Student Tours section lists diverse experiences offered in terms of student museum visits, from docent-led tours to hands-on art-making workshops. In the Educator Resource Finder section, users from across the country can connect to the Institute’s searchable database for classroom resources. Here, visitors can download everything from teacher manuals to artwork resource packetst.
Bottom Line: One of the United States’ preeminent art institutions offers a Web site worth a visit from educators.
