Description: Part science and part social studies, the making of "coal flowers" is a colorful chemistry experiment. Actually, the coal does little more than serve as the foundation for what becomes a beautiful collection of crystal "flowers," but because it was plentiful, coal mining families of the 1800s and 1900s used it to create these attractive decorations.
