iPad App Review: The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Friends

App Name:  The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Friends - Play and Learn

Cost:  $3.99

What does it promise? The world of legendary artist Eric Carle comes to life in this 3D pop-up app. Using eponymous characters such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear, Mister Seahorse and The Very Quiet Cricket, the creators promise that children will practice counting, sorting and memory skills, as well as learn about healthy eating and discover facts about real-life animals.

The app, which includes five language versions, features eight easy-to-play activities such as guiding the hungry caterpillar through a garden toward nutritious fruit; playing underwater hide-and-seek with Mister Seahorse and his children; and navigating Brown Bear around a forest to help her find her lost cub.

The creators promise that “children will love earning badges for completing the extra puzzles and challenges in every scene.”

Does it deliver?  The app is simple and delivers Carle’s unique art in an entertaining fashion. The game-play and accompanying music leaves children hungry for more.

Can I use it in my classroom?  The app is designed primarily for preschoolers, who will love navigating Carle’s famous characters through various puzzles and educational games.
