iPad App Review: BrainScape

App name:  BrainScape

Cost:  Free

What does it promise?  BrainScape helps users create their own flash cards to learn anything as efficiently as possible. Students can create multimedia flash cards on BrainScape’s Web site and on the app itself. They can share their decks with classmates and develop content together. Teachers are even able to track students’ study habits and performance.

The app offers users “expert” information on everything from languages and standardized tests to music theory and sports trivia. All users have to do is rate how well they know each concept on a 1-5 scale, and BrainScape determines the right time to quiz the user again on that subject.

Does it deliver?  The flash cards are colorful, making concepts easy to understand and remember. The app also provides shortcuts and tips for understanding subjects such as physics, mathematics and chemistry.

Can I use it in my classroom?  With many students having access to smartphones, tablets and the Web, BrainScape is an easy resource for teachers to recommend. Educators can create and share flashcards with their students, encourage students to create their own cards and more.
