White House Nixes Death Star Proposal

The Obama Administration has officially come out against the destruction of entire planets.

death starThe White House’s We The People initiative, an online petition that allows citizens to seek governmental action, is filled with what some would deem crazy requests. Nevertheless, the program promises that any petition generating at least 20,000 signatures will receive an official White House response.

That is what prompted an official Administration statement regarding inter-planetary destruction. A petition posted to We The People requested that the “government secure funding and resources, and begin construction on a Death Star by 2016.

By focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense.”

This petition garnered over 30,000 signatures, which led Paul Shawcross, Chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget, to respond,The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn't on the horizon.”

He lists several reasons, including the proposed space station’s estimated price tag of $850,000,000,000,000,000. Shawcross also poses the rhetorical question of, “Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?”

Shawcross goes on in his response to highlight many of NASA’s contributions to this type of technology: the International Space Station, the Mars Rover, etc. He also encourages students to study math, science and engineering in school. He concludes the official White House response by saying, “If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us! Remember, the Death Star's power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force.”

What Became of the Mayflower? Was it...

Perhaps you will find this interactive activity notebook of interest to use with your students during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Ever wonder what became of the Mayflower? The ship sailed with 102 pilgrims over the Atlantic to North America, in 1620. If you are expecting to find it docked to some pier, or in a museum, you’d be wrong. That’s because...

Setting the Tone for a Positive,...

During the first scenario, you wake up early, after hopefully a sound sleep, you sip coffee and eat your scrambled eggs, read the newspaper, maybe get a little exercise in. After showering and dressing, you leave to work a little early, knowing you could hit traffic. In the second case, you wake up late, scramble to get ready, forget to have breakfast and your much-needed caffeine, rush to your car and leave late, hoping you don’t hit traffic.

What’s the difference in these scenarios...

  2. The sailors on the Mayflower didn’t care for the Pilgrims and called them “flib-gabbety puke stockings” because so many of the Pilgrims got seasick.

Be a Teacher-Thinker

“Most children are taught early on that thinking is dangerous,” (Hooks, 2010, p.8).

Please answer the following questions on a sheet of paper or mentally if you prefer:

  1. Have you ever accepted a teaching pedagogy (shared with you during college coursework or during a professional development training) at face value, without questioning it?
  2. Have you ever implemented a practice—perhaps even your own idea for classroom management, instruction, etc.—without...

The Mystery of What Happened to Amelia...

I have always been fascinated in Amelia Earhart. Earhart was one of the first biographies I remember reading in grade school. She was such a role model as I was growing up. She showed that a woman was capable of doing anything she set her mind to doing!

Over the years I have been following Richard Gillespie’s TIGHAR (The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery) attempts to discover what happened to Earhart and her co-pilot, Fred Noonan, when they disappeared somewhere over...

In last week’s post, I covered the four authority bases that teachers use to influence student behavior. This week, I will further the discussion by presenting three different models of classroom discipline. By learning and understanding these three very different models, you can examine your own practices, comparing them to see where they “fall” in relationship to the models, and possibly make...
