Web Giants Warn of Malware

FBITwo giants of the Internet want to make sure you can still get to them after July 9.

Google and Facebook are actively scanning the computers of their users to find some of the nearly 1 million people who have been infected with the DNSChanger malware in the U.S. Google is displaying a warning across the top of its search results page, while Facebook has placed a similar warning at the top of its post-login page. If a user’s computer is infected, Google and Facebook will know and display the warning. Users who are not infected will see no warning at all.

With so many computers potentially impacted by the DNSChange malware, it is no surprise that these two mega-sites want to help eliminate it. Any machine afflicted with the DNSChanger will not be able to connect to the Internet after July 9.

As reported by CNet, the whole problem goes back to an online criminal ring from 2007 that was tinkering with computers' settings and then directing users to rogue servers that the criminals had set up. These servers then re-directed users to malicious Web sites. Late last year, the FBI arrested the ring and seized the rogue servers. But since so many infected computers relied on the servers to reach the Internet, the agency opted not to shut them down and instead converted them to legitimate DNS machines. Due to the high cost associated with operating these servers, the FBI has decided to shut them down on July 9, leaving any infected computer that has not been fixed with no way to reach the Internet.

The Google and Facebook warnings offer links to information on how to remove the DNSChange malware. Anyone who thinks he may be a victim is encouraged to run a Google search, or log in to Facebook to find out for sure.

The 120-IQ Kids: What Are We Doing For...

I work with one elementary student, who performs high or higher than most of my gifted students. During English/language arts, she masters research, reads grade levels above her peers, and exhibits creativity, innovation, and initiative. And yes, her test scores are well above average.

The ringer: she doesn’t qualify for gifted services.

The reason this child does not qualify comes down to numbers. The district requires a 130 or higher intelligence quotient, or two...

World Education Leaders Focus on Making...

In January, I talked with world leaders from India, England, Finland, and Europe about their goals to improve education. Each had a distinct project and clear opinions about what was the most important facet of education to focus on: from how to make education accessible to everyone, to how to make students into stronger candidates for jobs in the global marketplace.

At the dynamic Education Fast Forward 12 Debate on January 19, I spoke with Stefan...

Education Expert: Students Who Have...

By Jeffrey Beard

Howard Gardner’s “Good Project” is aimed at identifying individuals and institutions that “exemplify good work – work that is excellent in quality, socially responsible, and meaningful to its practitioners – and to determine how to best increase the incidence of good work in our society”.  It is this sort of...

Developing Virtual Total Talent...

I finally found the tool I have been looking for when it comes to having students create Total Talent Portfolios.

Total Talent Portfolios, or TTPs, are based on the work of Dr. Joseph Renzulli at the University of Connecticut and involve students creating a place where they can collect information about their learning preferences, strengths, talents, favorite subjects, goals and other important data about themselves.  Groups such as the National Association for Gifted...

Chinese New Year is a Great Opportunity...

China was covered in NYS 6th grade social studies. I covered China around the Chinese New Year each year and planned our trip to a chinese restaurant at this time. Students learned to use chopsticks and to say "hello," "please," "thank you" and "Happy New Year" in Chinese. It was always a very popular activity.  If you can't go to a chinese restaurant, stop at one and ask if you can get fortune cookies to share with your students. I found that they were happy to "give" them to me or for a...

Using the News as Bell Ringers or Exit...

Thought I'd share two news stories which might be of interest to use in the classroom in the beginning of the class period or at the end of the class.

ESPN to Use DRONE for the First Time!

The Global Search for Education:...

“A greater national focus on the criticality of educational equity is needed in order to mobilize the masses and invite everyone to be a part of the solution. Only when every person on the street realizes the role she can play in this movement, can we begin to change the conversations around education.” -- Shaheen Mistri

The Global Search for Education:...

“When jobs are changing rapidly, accumulating knowledge matters less, and success becomes increasingly about ways of thinking - creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving and judgment; about ways of working - collaboration and teamwork; about tools for working, including the capacity to recognize and exploit the potential of new technologies; and about the social and emotional skills that help us live and work together." -- Andreas Schleicher

Five Time-Effective Ways to Serve...

As a classroom teacher, you probably know the feeling. You have that student in class that finishes his or her work early, asks lots of questions, gets bored easily and maybe even points out mistakes that others make, including yourself. As you struggle to help the lower-performing students, you wonder what you can do with this child.

What you may have is a gifted child on your hands.

And without the proper training and strategies, that child could join...
