A high school student in Florida has been expelled and is facing felony charges after completing an unsupervised science experiment.
Sixteen-year-old Kiera Wilmot of Bartow High School wanted to see what would happen when she combined several household products in a plastic bottle. She conducted her experiment before the start of the school day and the result was a loud "pop" followed by a puff of smoke. The school's principal, who has admitted he believes the girl was merely curious and not attempting a nefarious act, was compelled to report the incident as he was in earshot when it happened. As a result the school district has had her expelled and arrested.
Wilmot is fighting the charges.
